How to make your winter head cold or flu experience as comfortable as possible with calming and revitalising beauty products

As I write this blog post, I’m currently getting over a disgusting head cold. You know the type that makes your neck stiff, your brain fuzzy, your ears blocked, your nose sniffly and your throat like razors. Pretty fun stuff!

Because I’m currently on day 5 of the ‘head cold cycle’, I’m starting to feel a little more human, meaning I can actually write this post and document some of the ways I’m making my life a little more pleasant.

Below are five beauty products that actually made my senses feel alive (instead of blocked) – a huge mood lifter when you’ve been walking around like a zombie.

These beauty products cover uplifting skin and haircare and exclude makeup – you know, the essentials. Why would you bother applying makeup when you’re coiled up in bed watching re-runs?

The ingredients in all of these products will actually make you feel better thanks to the likes of revitalising menthol, peppermint and eucalyptus. I’ve also included products with soothing ingredients like lanolin for sore chapped lips and a pesky pealing nose.

Lanolips 101 Ointment For Your Lips

When you’re coughing a lot, or blowing your nose with a tissue, your lips tend to get distressed and end up chapping (similar to how your nose ends up becoming red and starts peeling).

I recommend applying a rich, medicinal strength lip ointment like Lanolips 101 Ointment, $14.39. It will quench dry thirty lips and repair any damage super fast – in like a day!

Also, because the consistency is clear, you can also apply this healing ointment to any areas around your nose that are seriously chaffed. I love a double duty beauty product!

Bioderma’s Atoderm PO Zinc Ultra Soothing Cream For Your Nose & Face

My nose has really suffered during this particular head cold (it went from red to peeling thanks to excessive tissue use), so I’ve had to be very careful with my skincare regime as to not apply any serums or creams that would sting or burn the already irritated area.

I was so happy when looking through my beauty cupboard and finding Bioderma’s Atoderm PO Zinc Ultra Soothing Cream, $29.95, because it’s made for seriously distressed skin.

It’s fragrance free, filled with antioxidants and helps to purify and soothe the most sore skin (it fact, after doing some research on the product I’ve found it’s very popular for nappy rash!).

I’ve been applying it throughout the day under my nose and on my cheeks. It’s really helped to settle down the redness and burning sensation.

Arcona Cranberry Gommage For Congested Skin

During the earlier stages of your head cold you’re going to experience a fever that will have you burning up for a few minutes then shivering in your own sweat – again, a highly enjoyable experience. Because of this, you will actual start producing more oil on your face, your body’s attempt to cool you down.

With this in mind it’s important during your sickness to still exfoliate in the shower 3-4 times a week. I can’t recommend Arcona’s Cranberry Gommage enough, (currently available at Sephora, Sydney for $50).

The consistency and smell is just too good. This dense, gritty yet creamy lilac paste smells like fruity sherbet and your face will feel so smooth thanks to the enzymes in the blueberry, cranberry and raspberry. Zeolite and Sucrose also have powerful antibacterial benefits – perfect for your skin while you are sick.

Your face will literally feel like babies skin once your emerge from the shower. This has got to be one of my all time favourite exfoliators. Please give yourself the pleasure and try it ASAP!

Biore’s Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser With Menthol To Awaken Your Skin & Senses

As well as an exfoliator, you’ll also need a good daily cleanser to perk you up while you are sick.

Your steamy shower will already help to open up all of your congested senses (you’ll feel your nose clear within a few minutes). This is the perfect time to pull out an uplifting facial cleanser like Biore’s new Deep Pore Charcoal Cleanser, $10.99. It not only cleans out oily pores with charcoal that acts like a magnet to grit, but it features menthol that has a really revitalising scent. You will leave the shower actually feeling like a normal human being who can breath!

John Frieda’s Root Awakening Hydrating & Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner To Uplift Your Soul

A regular head cold lasts at least a week. If you’re lucky three days – but what are you? A super human? You’ll need to wash your hair at least twice during this time frame so a fantastic option that will make your scalp and senses come alive in John Frieda’s Root Awakening Hydrating & Nourish Shampoo and Conditioner, $15.99 each.

You will actually feel tingly and refreshed all over and your nose, thanks to the steam in the shower, will actually experience the smell of the peppermint extract and eucalyptus which not only gives amazing shine to your hair but makes you feel relaxed and energised all at once. Add to basket immediately!

Lovelies, what products do you use to help perk you up when sick? Have you used any of the above skin or hair care products before?
