Flawless Face: Foundations I’m Totally In Love With & Completely Loyal To
But how does one master skin so perfect that NOT ONE imperfection can be noted? After ogling the models backstage at 3.1 Phillip Lim at his recent NYFW Spring/Summer 15 show, I realised it’s all about picking the right formulation to suit your skin on the day.
My skin often asks for different things (temperamental brat!) meaning that one day I’ll wear nothing but a tinted BB cream for hydration and coverage, and the next day I’m all about hunting down my heavy cream foundation compact.
Here are THE BEST foundations for any kind of skin type (whether you have oily or dry) and for those days when you want next-to-no coverage or if you’re after something to smear on thick.
The best full-coverage foundations
NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation
In a large matte black rectangular case, this NARS cream compact is pretty hard to resist. What I love best about this foundation is it’s long coverage, it lasts all day long (8 hours+). It also comes in stunning colours that closely match the skins natural hue, you’ll never look over done. BUY IT FROM: Mecca Cosmetica, $49
Illamasqua Skin Base foundation
This is one of the foundations that I most often suggest to friends. I trust Illamasqua so much, they’ve never let me down. The price point of most of their items is very reasonable, especially because the quality can be likened to more premium beauty brands like Dior and Georgio Armani.
Skin base offers amazing coverage to cover even the worst skin. The liquid foundation also feels comfortable and hydrates. BUY IT FROM: Myer, $48
Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Sponge-On Cream Makeup
Elixabeth Arden’s luxe gold, silver and red packaging is simply stunning. If you’re looking for a thicker cream foundation to buff into your skin, you’ll love this. It will help cover any blemishes as well as fill in fine lines (albeit temporarily). Finish with a light dusting of powder to keep this foundation in place. BUY IT FROM: Feel Unique, $40
Revlon Photoready Airbrush Mousse Makeup
This foundation has been out for the public to buy for three years, and it’s still one of my favourites. Pushing down on the large button on top of the can, air-filled mousse will come out like foam. A little goes a long way with this foundation so don’t press too hard. It’s fantastic pigmented coverage, the only downfall in the very powdery foundation-like smell. BUY IT FROM: Priceline, $37
The best medium-coverage foundations
Natio Foundation SPF15
When my skin isn’t hormonal, this is one of my go-tos. This liquid foundation is pumped out of its dispenser and is really easy to spread onto the planes of your face and hydrates beautifully. With spf15, it’s also a goodie if you’re running a few short errands. BUY IT FROM: Priceline, $17.95
Revlon Colorstay Makeup For Normal/Dry Skin
An oldie but a goldie, this foundation was re-released last year with a pump dispenser opposed to its old screw off lid – great to keep your hands from getting dirty. The formulation is very milky and spreads easily – which is why it’s great for medium wear if you want more of a dewy look. BUY IT FROM: Priceline, $34.95
The best light-coverage foundations
Nude By Nature Liquid Mineral Foundation
For mineral makeup lovers, this foundation, which is a liquid mineral, is fantastic if you’re opposed to chemicals/colourings in regular foundations. Although it doesn’t have the most pigmented colouring, it is builable and great for when your skin IS behaving as it encourages healthy skin for a longer period of time. The only issue I had with this foundation is the smell – it’s very eggy? BUY IT FROM: Priceline, $39.95
M.A.C Prep + Prime BB SPS35
Being a BB cream, some would say this isn’t technically a foundation, but to me – a foundation is really any kind of tint that’s placed on the face, so this fits the bill.
I love this BB because it spreads easily on the face but also sets very well, stoping it from moving on your face throughout the day. I also love that it has SPF35 – great for our Aussie climate. BUT IT FROM: M.A.C, $42
