The Best Low to High End Mascaras Perfect For Any Budget & Lash Type

No makeup is really ever complete without a set of long, thick, beautifully fluttery eyelashes that open up the eyes and proclaim to the world ‘I’m ready!’.

With the sheer abundance of mascaras on the market (you can’t watch a single commercial break these days without being told there’s a new life-changing, innovative mascara hitting stores soon), I’ve decided to list the ones that actually work to make your eyelashes look instantly better.

I’ve said it before – there’s nothing worse then forking out the cash for a new mascara that claims to thicken, lengthen and separate to then get home and realise you’ve bought another dud that literally makes your lashes look wet in black ink… and not much else. *cue cringe face*

The best mascaras

The below list shows off the best of low and high end mascaras meaning you can buy a goodie on any budget. I’ve also picked a few options depending on what you’re looking for in terms of thickness, length, colour and the ability to separate each hair follicle.

Enjoy lovelies,

Rimmel London – Scandaleyes Rockin’ Curves Mascara

What’s it good for: Curving even the most stubborn straight lashes.

Rimmel London’s Scandaleyes Rockin’ Curves Mascara creates beautifully curled lashes. The wand itself features curved and spiralled bristles that tapper at the end. Thanks to this brush innovation, the wand easily gets in close to those teeny lashes at the corner of your eyes – without creating any icky smudges – and flicks them up and outwards.

The Balm – What’s Your Type Body Builder Mascara

What’s it good for: A true all-rounder. This mascara defines and separates your lashes while giving extra thickness.

I’ve been a repeat purchaser of this mascara over the last three years – it really is that good. If I know I’m going away on a long overseas holiday and can only pack one mascara (to avoid going over my weight limit) this is the one I choose. The short, perfectly positioned bristled easily get into your lash line, while the thick formula is able to lengthen, define and thicken. They do call this mascara the ‘Body Builder’ for good reason.

Urban Decay – Perversion Mascara

What’s it good for: Creating defined, long, extra-black lashes.

With a large chunky brush with plenty of bristles, this mascara wand has the ability to transform plain Jane lashes into large, fanned-out, super black frames for your eyes. I love how black the formula of this mascara is – definitely a winner.

The packaging of this mascara is also rather wonderful. A chic metallic black barrel with pastel lavender font, who would have thought the duo would marry so well?

It Cosmetics – Hello Lashes!

It Cosmetics Hello Lashes!

What’s it good for: Volumising while feeding the root of your lashes with peptides, proteins and collagen to encourage quick growth and healthier lashes.

At first glance this mascara looks like a pocket laser light (the type you’d get in trouble for taking to school) but upon twisting open the tube (with an ergonomically designed sponge-covered lid), you’ll find a clever plastic bristled wand with a round-ball shaped end perfect for coating even the most tricky and hard-to-get-to inner lashes.

This mascara doesn’t just volumise your lashes though. It’s an over-achiever that covers all bases. The 5-in-1 formulation contains hydra-luxe, pepetides, collagen, proteins, acai, green tea, jojoba and vitamins A, C, E and B5 to nourish your lashes during your wear. Smart!

Benefit – They’re Real Waterproof Mascara

benefit they're real mascara

What’s it good for: Creating lift from the root of the lashes making them appear longer with its waterproof, long lasting, formula.

This mascara is Myer’s number one seller for good reason. The flexible wand with small spiky plastic bristles can easily get into any lash line, and when slowly swivelled up from the root to the tips, you’ll end up with uniform lashes with plenty of curl.

Because this mascara is waterproof it will stay all day without leaving any smudges – just bare in mind that you will need a strong eye makeup remover to take it off later. Benefit has even creating the They’re Real Eye Makeup Remover ($25) for this purpose.

MAC – Haute & Naughty Lash

What’s it good for: The girl who wants thick lashes one day and long elongated lashes the next.

This mascara has serious wow factor. I was shocked when I brought the wand home to discover after a week (yes it took me that long!) that it has two different wands that have the same brush head.

Let me explain. If you twist open the mascara from the glittery purple section, you’ll end up with thicker lashes thanks to maximum mascara formula being allowed on the bristles of the wand.

However, if you twist open from the pink section, most of the black mascara will be removed through a catchment zone meaning you’ll be able to create long, spindly, elongated lashes because there is less formula on the bristles. Rather genius really!

Yves Saint Laurent – Volume Effect Faux Cils Mascara

What’s it good for: Super thick clump-free lashes evvvvery time.

I’m in love with this mascara. I’ve raved on about it here and here. Whenever I have an event to go to, or a special night out, this is the mascara I hunt down to get my lashes looking their best without having to apply false eyelashes.

Two coats of this mascara and you’ll have the thickest, most clump-free eyelashes across all of the seven seas.

I’ve purchased both the black and the blue option. Interestingly, if you do purchase the blue option and have dark lashes like me, the shade won’t show up as an opaque blue, but as a subtle tint that will really open up the eyes and make them appear more awake and sparkly. Give it a go.

Buy: $55 from Mecca Cosmetica

Chanel – Inimitable Waterproof Mascara

What’s it good for: Separating each and every lash and coating it in a pigment rich shade (from a wide range of colours).

Yet another fantastic mascara with a flexible wand and short plastic bristles (much like Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara shown above). This mascara, with its chic black and gold packaging and Chanel logo looks great on any beauty desk, bag or when applied in front of a gaggle of girls in a public bathroom.

Chanel’s Inimitable Waterproof Mascara has a thick formula that really helps to coat each lash from root to tip making each hair follicle double in size. The small plastic bristles help the formula comb through evenly minus any chunky clumps.

I first bought this mascara in number #37 – Lime Light, a neon aquamarine shade. Because this mascara is waterproof I’d apply this beautiful summery opaque colour to my bottom lash line to really open up my peepers. If you’re looking for any everyday colour, I’d stick to a black or brown though.
