Beauty Skincare Serum Special: Awarding 10+ Face Serums That Will Improve Your Complexion

serums for your face

Hi guys!

After testing and trialling many facial serums over the last couple of months, I’ve compiled a list of my absolute favourites as well as:

  1. What skin concern each targets,
  2. How to apply them to your face,
  3. How often to wear them and
  4. What each feels like on the skin.

I’ve also made sure to include links to each product so that you can easily purchase one if you fall in love with the description!

Make sure to look out for the little golden trophies I’ve placed next to each heading as well. This will indicate if it’s one of my top face serums that I highly recommend!

Enjoy!

Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum / Mild

Ultraceuticals Ulra A Skin Perfecting Serum / Mild

Used for:
Filling in fine line (particularly good on forehead and around the mouth).

How To Apply:
Pump the size of a ten cent coin onto fingertips and massage onto the large planes of your face. Be quick as this serum absorbs very fast.

How Often To Use:
Every second night until your skin can handle the tingle.

Feels Like:
Imagine butter that is whipped till it’s light and creamy. Feels quite fresh and tingly. It’s pretty much scentless so it doesn’t irritate or compete with your actual fragrance.

Shop it: Ultraceuticals Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum / Mild, $115

Live Clean Glowing Daily Serum

Live Clean Glowing Facial Serum

Used for:
To boost radiance and luminosity in the skin. Orchid extracts help to seal in skins natural moisture while vitamin C helps to produce a natural glow all over.

How To Apply:
1 to 2 squirts is enough. Place and blend onto the planes of your face and neck.

How Often To Use:
Daily!

Feels Like:
Very Cooling. You will become addicted to how refreshing this serum is in the morning, and how awake you will look all day long.

Shop it: Live Clean Glowing Daily Serum, $34.95

Shiseido Bio Performance Super Corrective Serum 🏆

Shiseido Bio Performance Super Corrective Serum

Used for:
To improve skins firmness and bounce-back plumpness.

How To Apply:
Dab the teeniest amount onto the forehead, cheeks and chin and blend straight away. This serum will absorb in front of your eyes. It’s so quick that it might happen before you have time to spread it around, so be fast!

How Often To Use:
Morning and evening. However, I prefer to use this during the evening as I can really enjoy how luxurious it is without covering it with makeup.

Feels Like:
This serum is beautifully scented and ultra rich. A little goes a long way so the price is quite reasonable. This is the most lavish serum I have tried and really loved. It’s also great for sensitive skin.

Shop it: Shiseido Bio Performance Super Corrective Serum, $125

La Mav Skin Brightening Vitamin C Advanced Nightly Repair Nectar

La Mav Skin Brightening Vitamin C Advanced Nightly Repair Nectar

Used For:
To make your skin appear lighter and more evenly toned. Great for fixing problem pigmentation.

How To Apply:
Use the dropper and place one pearl of serum on the back of your hand. With clean fingertips spread onto the planes of your face.

How Often To Use:
Because it’s quite rich, use every second night in conjunction with a night cream.

Feels Like:
This serum is very oily. Before you even begin to spread it, it will smell very strong of vitamin C. Make sure to tie your hair off your face before you go to bed otherwise you will wake up with an oily fringe that needs to be washed asap! That aside, it does help to make your skin look refreshed come morning.

Shop it: La Mav Skin Brightening Vitamin C Advanced Nightly Repair Nectar, $49.95

Rationale Immunologist Niacinamide Serum

Rationale Immunologist Niacinamide Serum

Used For:
Helps skin appear clearer and calms distressed skin.

How To Apply:
Apply on the face, neck and backs of hands.

How Often To Use:
This serum is best used in the morning as it wakes up your face and calms down any puffiness.

Feels Like:
This serum is quite sticky at first, but it spreads really easily and absorbs rather fast. I preferred to place it on my face rather than my hands, I didn’t like the sticky feeling while I typed on my keyboard during the mornings. It’s the most expensive serum that I tried, but sadly not my favourite. I think it’s important to keep in mind, though, that this is only step 1 of six treatments that are made to work in union with one another by Rationale.

Shop it: Rationale Immunologist Niacinamide Serum, $158

Kosmea Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil

Kosmea Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil

Used For:
To moisturise dehydrated skin and make it look youthful.

How To Apply:
Apply 2 droplets to hands and warm. Massage onto a slightly moistened face for best absorption.

How Often To Use:
I like to use this twice a week. I find that wearing this serum nightly is a little too heavy for me and can cause blocked pores.

Feels Like:
I actually really enjoyed this serum. It does smell like a traditional rose hip oil with that telltale nutty scent. Your skin will definitely feel extremely well moisturised and it will look plump, just make sure you don’t use too much or you will become an oil slick! Less is more beauties.

Shop it: Kosmea Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil, $12.95 for 10ml

Indeed Labs Retinol Reface

Indeed Labs Retinol Reface

Used For:
Make skin appear younger, smoother and softer.

How To Apply:
Apply a small amount to your fingertips and massage onto the planes of your face.

How Often To Use:
Retinol is a strong ingredient, and because this serum has 3 kinds of it in its formula, I recommend only wearing it twice a week on your face to start with until your skin has adapted to the active ingredients.

Feels Like:
Feels cooling and very refreshing. You may feel a slight tingle if you have just cleansed your face with an exfoliator as your pores will be well and truly open. I’ve applied this to my elevens (the expression lines between my eyebrows) and I have noticed that they have plumped up and my skin seems more youthful.

Shop it: Indeed Labs Retinol Reface, $34.99

Antipodes Apostle Skin Brightening and Tone Correcting Serum

Antipodes Apostle Skin Brightening and Tone Correcting Serum

Used For:
Correcting dull tired skin and fixing uneven skin tone from blemish scars.

How To Apply:
Apply to cleansed skin either morning or night. Two droplets is more than enough.

How Often To Use:
This water based serum is refreshing and not suffocating for your skin. For this reason you can wear it every day.

Feels Like:
This serum is very calming on your skin. It smells like pureed apricots (either I have a vivid imagination or I’ve been watching too many cooking shows) and it soaks into the skin very fast. Interestingly some of the key ingredients are kiwi seed, aloe vera and surprisingly sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and vitis vinifera grape seed – now I’ll drink to that!

Shop it: Antipodes Apostle Skin Brightening and Tone Correcting Serum, $59

Antipodes Hosanna H2o Intensive Skin Plumping Serum 🏆

Antipodes Hosanna H2o Intensive Skin Plumping Serum

Used For:
To immediately quench skin and provide powerful hydration.

How To Apply:
Spread two droplets all over your face and neck.

How Often To Use:
This serum can be used morning and night, I prefer it in the wee hours of the morning as it really wakes up my skin.

Feels Like:
Wowzers – this really is my favourite serum of all time! It’s actually pretty hard to describe how truly hydrating this oil-free, water based gel is. I think Antipodes has hit the nail on the head by naming it Hosanna (meaning saviour or rescuer in biblical circles) because my skin was more than happy to be taken to a ‘better place’ thanks to its powerful plumping and hydrating qualities. It feels very cooling on the skin thanks to ingredients like New Zealand Vinanza sauvignon blanc grape seed and prehistoric looking mamaku black fern which helps skin cell renewal.

Shop it: Antipodes Hosanna H2o Intensive Skin Plumping Serum, $46

Philosophy Total Matte-ness Pore Eraser

Philosophy Total Matte-ness

Used For:
This serum helps to reduce the size of large pores. It also slows down oil production so that your makeup won’t slide off your face.

How To Apply:
Apply 5 minutes before you do your makeup. This will give the serum time to soak in and create a matte surface on your skin.

How Often To Use:
As often as you like, but I’d use it only once a day to not over do it!

Feels Like:
This serum is very unique as it sets with an almost powdery finish. I’ve found that when I wear this under my makeup, I don’t need to go anywhere near my oil blotting papers during the day. Definitely a winner!

Shop it: Philosophy Total Matte-ness Pore Eraser, $50

Ultraceuticals Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum 🏆

Ultraceuticals Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum

Used For:
This serum provides hydration as well as anti-ageing benefits thanks to two kinds of vitamin B – Provitamin B5 and B3.

How To Apply:
Apply two droplets to clean skin and massage in.

How Often To Use:
Either in the morning or night.

Feels Like:
This 100% Australian owned serum is oil-free and sits comfortably on the skin. I loved this serum because its a Jill of all trades – it helps to retain moisture in the skin, it plumps up fine lines and wrinkles, it has the power to make scar tissue visibly improve and it creates a protective barrier on your skin to prevent future environmental damage. It doesn’t have a distinct smell which is great because it doesn’t compete with your fragrances during the day.

Shop it: Ultraceuticals Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum, $85

Grown Alchemist Rose Hip and Camilla Seed Extract 🏆

Grown Alchemist Rose Hip and Camilla Seed Extract

Used For:
To improve skins elasticity and the appearance of fine lines.

How To Apply:
Apply two droplets to your finger tips and massage onto the planes of your face concentrating on your temples, forehead and anywhere you need extra attention.

How Often To Use:
I recommend using this only a couple of nights during the week. Try not to wear this under makeup as it will cause your foundation to move during the day.

Feels Like:
This serum smells so beautiful, unlike a lot of other rose hip oils. I put this down to the fact it’s a hybrid and also contains gorgeous camilla seed oil which smells great. The camilla seed provides powerful omega 3, 6 & 9 to restore skins elasticity while the rose hip helps to protect your skin from free radicals and ageing.

Shop it: Grown Alchemist Rose Hip and Camilla Seed Extract, $24.95

Antipodes Joyous Protein rich night replenish serum

Antipodes Joyous Protein rich night replenish serum

Used For:
Promotes the natural production of collagen and elastin in the skin. It also makes skin look radiant and illuminated from within.

How To Apply:
Apply to your neck and face in upwards strokes.

How Often To Use:
Nightly.

Feels Like:
This serum boasts an impressive cocktail of ingredients. Everything from Himalayan goji berries (which contain 19 amino acids! Talk about being a showoff!) red raspberry seed oil, New Zealand black current and South Pacific hibiscus flower all work to replenish your skin as you sleep! This serum really puts some weight behind the saying ‘beauty sleep’. It smells really lovely and absorbs fast, so no residue will be wasted on your pillow slip. I’ve loved waking up in the morning and taking in my fresh and awake complexion. Thanks Antipodes!

Shop it: Antipodes Joyous Protein rich night replenish serum, $59

Antipodes Divine Face Oil / Organic Avocado Oil & Rose Hip

Antipodes Divine Face Oil / Organic Avocado Oil & Rose Hip

Used For:
This serum is perfect for sun damaged skin as avocado works hard to awaken damaged skin cells and return vitality to your face.

How To Apply:
Apply to cleansed skin in upwards motions (so your pores can really drink up all the goodness)

How Often To Use:
Daily or after sun exposure.

Feels Like:
This oil takes a little longer to absorb due to the high oil content coming from organic avocados. The scent isn’t too strong either. I found that applying this serum to acne scars or eczema really helped to calm my skin and improve any discolouration caused from minor scars.

Shop it: Antipodes Divine Face Oil / Organic Avocado Oil & Rose Hip, $33
