Tonight we’re staying in! ‘Girls night’ beauty basics to pamper in style
Sometimes the last thing you want to do after an excruciatingly busy week is head back into the city for drinks with the girls, in heels, when your feet already ache.
It’s times like these when you need to put your foot down, better yet, put your feet in a bucket of warm bubbly water and tell your friends to come to you for a girls night in.
To make the most of this pamper-sesh with your very important ladies, I suggest picking up a few beauty basics that will turn your Friday or Saturday night into the most relaxing weekend yet.
Who needs club queues and sleazy jeers from suits at a bar?
What you’ll need:
- Makeup remover
- Face cleanser
- Face scrub
- Face mask
- Nourishing night cream
- Boho hair bands
- Hair mask
- Foot scrub kit
- Nail polish remover and on-trend nail colours
- Candles (duh!)
When your gal pals arrive, hand them a glass of wine, tell them to slip into something comfortable (I’ve always been a fan of Peter Alexander Pj’s) and get comfy on the lounge in front of the latest romcom. It doesn’t even matter if the movie is bad, you’ll laugh at the awkward cringe-worthy moments and besides, you’ll be too busy concentrating on your mani to notice.
Give yourself an at-home facial
Start by taking off all of your makeup. There will be a few of you so I suggest using theBalm’s Balm’s Away Eye Makeup Remover as a little goes a long way. I’ve had the same cute vintage-looking tin for over two years! ($24.95)
Once all of your heavy duty makeup has been taken off, start with a simple cleanse.
You can either buy large stainless steel bowls for everyone to use during the cleansing and scrubbing process, or you can just use the bathroom vanity one by one.
I suggest using Simple’s Radiance Brightening Facial Wash. Simple is a great brand to use at it’s gentle on the skin so you won’t have to worry about any of your friends suffering sore inflammation – there’s just too many skin types out there to take a risk!
This particular cleanser contains reflecting particles that make your skin appear brighter and more glowing. Oh, and it’s budget friendly at only $14.99! Win!
It’s now time to slough away dead skin cells. One of my all-time favourite exfoliators is by the masters at Philosophy. Their Microdelivery Exfoliating Facial Wash ($40) acts as a mini peel (or an at-home microdermabrasion), revealing fresh even skin and even helping to buff at fine small lines on your forehead and around your lips.
Your friends will be in complete shock at how flawless their complexion looks after they scrub away at their faces.
I recommend allowing your pores to open first by placing your face over a bowl of steamy hot water. Place a towel over your head as your inhale and exhale the warm steamy air. Once your face feels dewy from the heat take this exfoliator and buff away at your skin in circular motions for at least 2 minutes before washing off.
Time to nourish your skin and draw out hidden impurities. I love the multi-award winning Alpha-H Liquid Gold Smoothing and Perfecting Mask, $65. This mask literally is pure gold! I’ve never experieneced such glowing, blemish-free skin when using this once a week.
The formulation is made up of a mix of hydrating macadamia nut oil, Rose and Lavender extracts while 15% glycolic acid (that’s what’s giving the surface of your skin a tingle) exfoliates away at dead skin cells and kills any bacteria left on your skin.
Suffer from acne or the occasional bout of premenstrual pimples? You need this mask in your life!
Make sure to pull your hair off your face while you have this mask on. I recommend buying a few of these cheap boho headbands from ebay ($1.50 each).
While you’re waiting for the face mask to activate, use your time wisely and massage in a hair mask. Make sure your hair in damp first, simply dip your hair in some warm running water in your bathroom vanity, or under the shower quickly while you’re still wearing your robe, and pop on your hair treatment of choice.
I like legendary French beauty brand Christophe Robin. His Regenerating Mask tub (250ml for $77) is one of the most hardworking masks on the market with ingredients like prickly pear seed oil, plant ceramindes and Inula Flower extract which all bring vitality back to even the worst damaged and dyed hair.
Soothing moisturiser to lock-in all your hard work
After all your cleansing, exfoliating and detoxing it’s time to pamper your skin with a heavenly night cream.
I love Benefit’s Total Moisture Facial Cream, $62. This lightweight, fast absorbing moisturiser will lock in much needed moisture in your skin, so that when you girls wake up the following day you’ll be glowing. The key ingrediant is Benefit’s patented ‘tri-radiance complex’.
This hydrating moisturiser is crucial after exfoliating or wearing a face mask because all of your natural oils have been sucked out of your glands meaning you will feel dry if you don’t.
Nothing feels better then a relaxing foot scrub. This is the perfect time to put on that Romcom I mentioned earlier and unwind.
If you want to buy a kit that has it all, you can’t look past The Body Shop’s Peppermint Pedi Pamper Tin.
Each kit has two Peppermint Foot Fizzies to create bubbles in your bucket, Peppermint Foot Lotion, a pair of Moisture Socks, a ‘No Rough Stuff’ Pumice Stone, Foot Shaped Toe Dividers for when you paint your toesies, a handy Nail Buffer and of course Nail Clippers. All of this costs only $29.95!
I suggest each person should have their own kit so they get their own pair of moisture socks and can keep all the rest themselves.
The only other thing you will need is a plastic bucket wide enough to place your feet in each while you watch your movie. You can pick these up in the laundry section of most supermarkets.
For the girls not wearing gel or acrylic nails, it’s time to remove existing nail polish and paint your fingers and toes a chic on-trend shade.
I’m loving L’oreal Paris Colour Riche Le Vernis Nail Polishes ($7.95) right now. These polishes are long wear and super glossy.
Pick a fantastic neutral (101 Opera Ballerina), pop bright (Royal Orchid) and autumn shade (Scarlett Vamp).
Two coats later and your nails will look salon perfect.
Make sure to always wear a base coat, however, or your nail beds will stain and your polish won’t last as long.
I think Ciate’s new Nail Gym is fantastic. The intensive treatment will heal unhealthy nails from the top down and can be worn undernath your nail polish colour. Love it! Pst – if you’re a sucker for amazing packaging like me, check out the cute box this polish comes in! ($23).
Light a candle
I love to collect candles – I have so many soy wax candles in all different scents to suit my mood at home. If you’re ready to buy your first relaxation-purpose candle I suggest starting with a heavenly Glasshouse scent.
The gorgeous glass jars are filled with the most exquisite perfumed scents inspired by everything from rare fruit to tropical locales.
I love that they’re soy-wax based as well, meaning less soot and their burn-time is worth every penny.
For your ‘girls night in’ I’d go for the fun Coney Island scent ($39.95).
Inspired by New York’s famous amusement park with decades of rich history, a harmonious blend of burnt sugar (did someone say cotton candy?) and fresh fig will fill any room and waft throughout your abode.
I love how this candle isn’t too over powering – some vanilla based candles can put you in a sugar coma. Because Coney Island has top notes of white peony and passionfruit, these light and fresh scents help to balance out the sugary base notes perfectly.
Let me know how your ‘girls night in’ goes. What products do you splurge on for your nights in?
