Fashion Trend: How To Wear Animal Print

I’m a big fan of animal print when it comes to fashion. Give me leopard spots, tiger and zebra stripes and even cheetah and chital speckles. I’ve always believed that animal print adds depth and interest to any outfit – especially if it’s textured.

So how do you take this textile and make it work for you, for both day and night? And are there rules for whether you should stick to just accessories, or go the whole hog and wear this print head to toe?

After dipping not just my toe, but my whole body into this trend, I can safely say I’ve worked out how to make this a hit rather than a miss.

For day, I suggest you play with some of the stylish animal print accessories that have currently flooded the market, this is where you’ll be able to add texture as well. Why not try a pair of leopard print flats made from calf hair that will contrast beautifully with washed-out denim? Just look to Minka Kelly, who’s donning a great example with her Elizabeth & James Cynnie Sling Leopard Print Backpack that’s made from calf hair.

Keep this rule at the forefront of your mind though, one leopard print accessory is enough! Don’t over do it with a matching wallet, shoes, cuff etc. If you wear one as a power statement, you can’t go wrong.

For night, you can go all out. It’s a little bit like eyeshadow. For daytime it’s more safe to stick with a little bit of gel eyeliner and fluttery lashes. For night you can work a sexy smokey eye with falsies without looking O.T.T.

I suggest looking for a dress or playsuit that is spotty (leopard print or cheetah) but not in the traditional colours (oranges and browns). Instead, go for a more resort feel with delicate neutrals or feminine subtle purple and green tones. This will stop your outfit from looking too costume-y – you don’t want to look like a cast member from The Flintstones!

Or, if you want to wear an animal print in all of its natural glory, then opt for a unique zebra stripe piece which I feel is a safer more fashionable bet for night time.

Camilla Belle recently wore this standout zebra striped Gucci long-sleeved dress to a dinner party. I love how she was able to balance out the overall look with a burgundy clutch, neutral makeup and black nails – so gorgeous and bang on trend.
